Rocket House, originally built as a coastguard station for storing lifesaving equipment, including rockets used to fire rescue lines to stricken vessels along the rugged North Devon coastline, is a striking piece of maritime history. Located within the North Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), the building was converted into a holiday home in the 1970s, before change of use to a residential property in the late 1980s.
Piper Architecture was commissioned to extend and improve the structure, repositioning the main living space to the first floor to take advantage of the truly spectacular coastal landscapes. The design, both sympathetic and bold, responds to its dramatic location, enhancing the building’s relationship with its breathtaking surroundings and garnering favour with the local planning authority.
