This stunning old stone barn was on the brink of collapse when the client envisioned transforming it into a beautiful holiday rental to enhance their dairy farm’s offerings on the North Devon/Cornwall border.
The ambitious brief called for a spacious open-plan living area combining kitchen, dining, and lounge, ideal for families holidaying together. It also included a separate children's/game room, accessible sleeping accommodations for elderly and disabled guests, ensuite bedrooms, and an inviting outdoor area with a barbecue and hot tub.
Converting the barn posed challenges due to its thick stone walls and limited openings, but its natural layout perfectly suited the open-plan vision. The double-height entrance hall showcases a striking new trussed roof structure, while a custom split staircase adds a unique touch.
Externally, the use of natural slate and timber joinery, in line with English Heritage guidelines, garnered the local planning authority's approval and preserves the barn’s rustic charm.
